CommonCraft offers a great tutorial on blogs: their origin, uses, and how to get the most out of them:
Weblogs can range from personal journals (such as mine at http://blog.gracerodriguez.com) to highly-read blogs that rival mainstream media (such as http://www.huffingtonpost.com/. Blog topics can be journalistic, experiential, analytical, collaborative, or simply cover any area of information that people are passionate about and want to share.
Blogs allow people to easily publish their ideas, and others to comment on them. Blogs - unlike traditional websites - are fluid and dynamic, enabling the development of conversations among bloggers and their audiences. As more people read, write, and comment on blogs, content creation on the Web becomes a shared experience, with formerly passive audiences (consumers of information) transforming into active participants (contributors of information).
Blogs allow everyone to have - and express - a voice.
